Chapter 7

Thicket was shaking as he continued to work the silver into a shield. I felt awful for calling him back, but I really wanted to present Hades with the gifts. “Thank you for coming back. After the mess I presented, I really needed this to smooth things over with his dad.”

Thicket paused with his tiny hands on the silver and looked up at me. “I would do anything for you, Phoebe. I left because Hades’ power was overwhelming. I thought my wings were going to burn up. The entire mound is talking about how Thia lasted a couple of hours in his presence and made him food. No one’s ever managed something so brave.”

I picked up the dagger I retrieved from Aidoneus when Mythia went to cook dinner. I couldn’t be in the same room as the god a second longer. Plus, I really did want to finish these gifts, but I no longer had my magic. Which meant I needed Thicket to do it for me.

“Nana was just as brave. She told him off.” Nina was leaning forward in the chair next to Nana’s recliner with a smile on her face.

Jean-Marc kept his gaze on the shield while he continued manipulating the silver-like Thicket had instructed. “It was freaking awesome. She put the god in his place, and Gammy showed him how much smarter she is than him.”

“Hades is a father before he’s a god,” Nana blurted. “He came here as a dad concerned about his son and the woman he’s chosen. Every parent is entitled to make sure their child’s chosen partner is worthy. I simply had no patience for his continued tantrum. It wasn’t a big deal.”

Laughter burst from me, and I shook with the force of it. Nina and Jean-Marc joined in while Thicket looked at us like we had lost our minds. “You’re lucky the god didn’t unleash his full power and incinerate you on the spot. It speaks to how much he loves his son that he showed restraint.”

“Honestly, I hadn’t stopped to think about it,” I admitted. “I was so bewildered and lost then flooded with emotion and memories after Aidoneus kissed me.”

“So, he is your boyfriend, after all. And I can see he’s joining us for the holidays.” Jean-Marc gave me a shit-eating grin.

I chuckled and shook my head. “Like I told Hades. I hadn’t labeled anything or even thought about how much I cared for him until his father tried to drive a wedge between us. In the face of Hades’ derision, I wasn’t about to fall prey to the old saying of not realizing what I had until it was gone. I suppose it was easier to recognize what had been building because I’d just gotten my memories and connections back.”

Nina sighed and propped her head on her hand. “I hope I find a love like that someday.”

“Don’t settle for anything less. Either of you. Your great-grandfather and I shared a deep love. It’s out there, but most go all in with the first good-looking guy or girl that comes along.
